I know Supertramp were ridiculous, the epitome of hippy. But those tunes! Oh my God they were incredible, the greatest pure pop with the merest hint of proggy and unlike their more egotistical peers, absolutely no pomp. They have remained my most secret, secret pleasure, absurd and ridiculed yet hugely likeable. Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson just couldn’t help but write good stuff. And they performed it all with absolutely no fuss.
What I liked about them was that unlike a similar set up, say 10cc, they had no pretensions or agendas, hidden or otherwise. They were just supreme craftsmen who did their thing which just happened to get all our feet tapping and our hearts singing, nothing more, nothing less. But it was enough.
